Magnesium -- You Need More !
At the Weston A. Price Foundation conference in Santa Clara (Nov. 2012), Dr. Carolyn Dean, MD, ND, spoke
about the amazing benefits of magnesium, which matters because most soil is deficient, including Sonoma County.
Dr. Dean wrote The Magnesium Miracle to help the 75% of us who are magnesium deficient. Eighty years
ago, there was 500 mg of magnesium in a glass of milk, now it’s 200 mg. The RDA is 350, but we actually need
twice that amount. Dr. Dean points out, “Without magnesium you have very bad behavior,” such as:
· Irritability
· Anger
· Mood swings
· Anxiety
· Depression
· PMS
· Poor concentration
It’s a delicate balance: calcium tightens muscles, magnesium relaxes them. Magnesium deficiency signs:
· Angina: heart muscles tighten too much
· Hypertension: muscles around arteries tighten
· Acid reflux: esophageal muscles tighten too much
· Constipation: intestinal muscles too tight
Even at the cellular level, when calcium too freely enters the cell due to inadequate magnesium, the cell spasms.
There’s another interesting connection, this one between chlorophyll and hemoglobin. Look at these molecules
side by side and they are exactly the same—except that chlorophyll has magnesium at the center while hemoglobin
has iron.
Magnesium is an essential co-factor in 325 to 1,300 different enzymes that function in up to 10,000 chemical
reactions in the body. In other words, 80% of our bodily activities require magnesium:
· Control of digestion, absorption, utilizing protein, fats, carbs, vitamins, and minerals
· Cholesterol production
· Temperature regulation
· Nerve and muscle firing, i.e. the body’s bio-electricity
· DNA production
· Energy production via ATP
The ATP molecule (i.e. ATP-Mg) is magnesium-dependent. Fatigue is the first sign of Mg deficiency. ATP may be
the chi of Chinese medicine
Why Do We Have Magnesium Deficiency?
· Soil depletion
· Until recently, we had no accurate blood test
· Magnesium neutralizes acid rain
· In the past, land grant colleges researched nutrition, now most research is financed by Big Pharma seeking patents
· Antacids prevent absorption
· Mercury from amalgam fillings blocks magnesium
· Fluoridated, chlorinated water prevent absorption
· Tannins in green and black tea, chard, spinach, soy all block magnesium (even when cooked)
· Phosphates from junk food bind up magnesium
· Drugs like birth control, cocaine, corticosteroids, diuretics, insulin, and nicotine block magnesium
Health Issues Helped by Magnesium:
· Anxiety & Panic Attacks
· Asthma
· Blood Clots
· Bowel Disease, Constipation
· Cholesterol control
· Depression (Serotonin, the feel-good hormone, is dependent on Mg)
· Detox
· Diabetes (Mg is necessary for production and transport of insulin and transport into cells)
· Fatigue
· Fibromyalgia
· Heart Disease
· Hypertension
· Hypoglycemia
· Insomnia
· Migraine
· Nerve Problems, Cramps, Tics
· Ob/Gyn Issues (preeclampsia, edema from retaining flu, infertility, PMS, menopause problems)
· Osteoporosis
· Raynaud’s Syndrome
· Tooth Decay
Calcium Overload There has long been a false notion that we should take half as much magnesium
supplement as calcium. An early French researcher; was mistranslated; a more correct English version is, “Never
exceed a 2:1 Cal/Mg ratio, but 1:1 is better.”
Calcium toxicity leads to heel spurs, fibromyalgia, breast calcification, kidney stones, hardened arteries, brittle bones,
and calcification of soft tissue, such as plaque in arteries, bronchial tubes, and even brain tissue.
Magnesium is natural calcium channel blocker, it dissolves calcium. See for yourself: calcium makes water ‘milky’ but
won’t dissolve in water. Add magnesium, and the water clears.
Magnesium Test Magnesium is high inside cells, while calcium is high in the fluid between cells. It is hard
to measure a person’s level of magnesium because only 1% of Mg is in the blood, and blood levels will always look
good, even in a deficient person, as the body seeks homeostasis. Well-known magnesium researchers Drs. Bella and
Burton Altura rely on Nova Biomedical’s Ionized Magnesium Test.
Food Sources (milligrams of Mg per 100 grams, which is 3.5 ounces)
760 Kelp
490 Wheat Bran
336 Wheat Germ
220 Dulse
120 Black Beans
162 Millet
Soil Deficiency Good news: farmers are using rock dust to return magnesium to soil, see Remineralize.org
Anxiety, Depression, Addiction are suffered by one third of Americans; the rate more than doubled
since WWII. But this is not due to a Prozac deficiency! One study found that most people with depression were also
magnesium-deficient. Other symptoms are anger, apathy, apprehension, chest pain, confusion, difficulty breathing,
dizziness, fatigue, hyperemotionality, insomnia, lump in the throat, muscle cramps and weakness, nervousness,
palpitations, poor memory, rapid pulse, tics, tingling or creeping feeling on the skin.
ADD, Autism, Childhood Depression all correlate with magnesium deficiency. Since school food is
so deficient, American children are probably more deficient than adults. Over 10 million children and adolescents are
on antidepres-sants, 5 million are on Ritalin et al. Children could take one tablespoon of magnesium citrate a day,
or 1.5 teaspoons of milk of magnesia a day, doses too low to be laxative. Magnesium’s relaxing effect explains why
1 to 1.5 cups of Epsom Salts (magnesium sulfate) in a bath will clear up constipation for an ADD child.
Brain Protection Did you know that magnesium protects the brain from food additives and MSG? Children
are far more sensitive to allergens than in the past, could it be magnesium deficiency?
Migraine “Magnesium prevents platelet aggregation, which helps to avoid the thickened blood and tiny clots that
can cause blood vessel spasms and the pain of a migraine,” writes Dr. Dean. A group of 3,000 patients given 200 mg.
of magnesium daily had an 80% reduction in their migraine symptoms. In a different study, intravenous magnesium
ended their migraine symptoms. Oral magnesium citrate (300 mg 2-3/day) plus 400 mg. of B2 (riboflavin) also works well.
Sudden Death Athletes seem like the last people who would die suddenly. But sweat takes magnesium out of
the body, causing heart muscles to cramp. Seizures and even death can occur after strenuous activity. Athletes in
training should take at least 2.7 to 4.5 mg/lb/day. For a 150-pound woman that’s 400-680, while 220-pound man would
need 600-1000 mg/day, says magnesium specialist Dr. Mildred Seelig.
Stroke In a meta-analysis, based on 7 studies (241,378 participants), each 100 mg increase in magnesium intake
meant 8% reduction in stroke risk. http://www.naturalmedicinejournal.com/article_content.asp?article=288
Anyone recovering from a stroke will want to know about RELOX, a procedure developed by Drs. Bruce Rind and
Sean Dalton, that combines an intravenous vitamin-mineral solution with oxygen by mask (or even hyperbaric oxygen
chamber therapy). As one patient said, "To my excitement, within minutes I was able to feel my fingertips on my right
side. The first time in ten years! As the minutes rushed by I discovered the lost feeling of my toes.” You can see the
Before and After SPECT brain scans that show this amazing improvement at: http://www.nihadc.com/therapies/relox.html
Heart Attacks Seven major clinical studies show that IV magnesium reduced the risk of death by 55% after acute
heart attacks. Meanwhile, in studies cited by Big Pharma, magnesium was delayed 2 days, and, oddly, got “no results.”
Supplementation Dr. Dean’s book quotes Dr. Norman Shealy, who said that magnesium is “notoriously
difficult to absorb orally,” requiring 6 to 12 months to reach good cellular levels. Only 4% of the most common
supplement, magnesium oxid, is absorbed. Dr. Dean likes Pico Ionic magnesium, a better pill form since ion
channels are very small, pico meter size, not even visible with an electron microscope. Regarding dosage, it’s safe
to take too much magnesium, you just won’t want to because it has a laxative effect. Avoid magnesium glutamate
since glutamic acid is neurotoxic. When taking calcium, it’s important to also get magnesium and vitamin C, and
the fat soluble vitamins A, D, and K2 assist absorption.
Skin application of magnesium “oil” is very effective in only 4 to 6 weeks. At a Sonoma County Weston Price
Foundation chapter meeting, the consensus was to rely on diet and skin absorption. (Magnesium chloride from
ancient sea beds, called Magnesium Oil, has a slick texture but doesn’t contain oil.) Some order it from
Health-and-Wisdom.com while others said SwansonVitamins.com has good quality magnesium chloride
brine from the ancient Zechstein Sea. A teaspoon contains about 2,500 mg of elemental magnesium. Some
people use 10-15 sprays twice a day. Many like Calm, an ionic magnesium citrate to mix with water from Natural
Vitality.
Dr. Dean says homeopathic Mag Phos 6x quickly relieves muscle spasms.
You can also add ¼ teaspoon of good quality sea salt to each pint of water, providing magnesium plus 92 other minerals.

P.S. Cheeseslave, a blogger many in our chapter enjoy, wrote, “Since supplementing with magnesium, my body odor
is 100% gone and I’ve kicked deodorant to the curb.“
